Cancer Thermodynamics: A Continuum Approach: Credit Seminar By Livingston IInd yr M.Tech

There is a historical objection against the universal validity of the second law of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic properties such as entropy are of predictive value for reactions and their directions. Cancer cells have the varied entropy against normal healthy cells. There is an entropy information flow from tumor cells to the normal cells in their vicinity. The reversal of entropy flow in coexisting normal and tumor tissues may halt the tumor development due to reversal of the signal transmission entropy in the tumor-host entity. The different entropy production rate between the normal and cancerous cells determines the direction of informational entropy current between them. There are many determining factors that regulate the direction of entropy information flow. These components are the promising targets for the cancer treatment. In this review, the determining components for the entropy information in cancerous condition will be discussed.

Support for GM crops,in face of rising food costs

An article published recently in Farmers Weekly August issue about the recent interest on "GM crops" in face of rising food costs.

More than a third of shoppers think genetically-modified foods should be allowed to be sold in the UK.

Research carried out on behalf of the Crop Protection Agency found 35% of consumers would support GM foods being stocked on supermarket shelves, while 37% think they should be allowed if they were nutritious.

In the face of rising grocery bills, the number of people who said they would back GM food rose to 44% if the technology kept food prices down. That figure increased to 46% if GM foods proved safe for the environment.

The findings came after 1,009 UK shoppers were asked about their concerns about food security. Conducted by Network Research between 16 and 19 May this year, the research also aimed to find out how rising food prices were affecting people's shopping and consumption habits.

A REVIEW ON BIODIESEL PRODUCTION USING FUNGI , Credit Seminar by Mary Sanitha IInd Yr M Tech

High energy prices, energy and environment security, concerns about petroleum supplies are drawing considerable attention to find a renewable biofuels. Biodiesel, a mixture of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) derived from animal fats or vegetable oils, is rapidly moving towards the mainstream as an alternative source of energy. However, biodiesel derived from conventional petrol or from oilseeds or animal fat cannot meet realistic need, and can only be used for a small fraction of existing demand for transport fuels. In addition, expensive large acreages for sufficient production of oilseed crops or cost to feed animals are needed for raw oil production. Therefore, oleaginous microorganisms are available for substituting conventional oil in biodiesel production. Most of the oleaginous microorganisms like microalgae, bacteria, fungi and yeast are all available for biodiesel production. Fungi, especially endophytic fungi  is more advantageous than other microorganisms. Besides the production of vitamins, enzymes and novel secondary metabolites, it has been reported that certain endophytic fungi have the capacity to accumulate high amount of lipid (up to 35% of dry biomass), and simultaneously secrete cellulase enzyme. Some researchers have documented that endophytic fungi can produce laccase and xylanase. Therefore, secretion of relevant enzymes for lignocellulose degradation by endophytic fungi enables them to be cultured on various cheap plant materials (straw, other agro-residues or plant-wastes, etc.,).

Research Internship Experience in Germany, Manchalu Srinivas VII Sem

"It takes a lot of imagination to be realistic, because reality is so much more than we imagine."
Research has always been an interest in the back of my head. As I started applying to research institutes all over the world, I was faced with many rejections. Keeping my spirtis up, I continued to apply and my efforts finally paid off when I got an offer from Dr. Lorenz Adrian, Dept of Isotope Biogeochemistry, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research-UFZ, Leipzig, Germany in my Sixth semester.
My Research Block
Landing in Germany on a cold Saturday morning, I was awestruck with the beauty of Leipzig and the institute where I was going to be working for the next six weeks. The institute, the people and the infrastructure were really amazing. I received a warm welcome from the department. The friendly behaviour, co operation and encouragement from my supervisor helped me adjust to the new surroundings easily.
With my Technical Assistant

Ananerobic Chamber, My work place
The first day was informative as I understood the research projects the scientists were working on at the institute. The primary area of research at the institute is on "anaerobic bacteria which is capable of dehaloginating toxic compounds which are accumulating in the environment".

I was working with Myriel Cooper, a PhD student on “Substrate range studies of Dehallococcoides sp. CBDB1” an anaerobic bacterium by photometric, chromatographic and molecular biological assays by using Sprectophotometer, Flourosence microscope, Gas chromatography and PCR

I have been invited to do my final year project at “Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmocology(FMP), Berlin, Germany for six months from December 2011 to June 2012 with a monthly stipend of 200 Euro. I will be working on “Transient modulation of tight junction (TJ) proteins by peptides to enhance the paracellular drug delivery”.

Germany is a beautiful place with a diverse culture. It is a melting pot of cultures from around the world. Case in point, I had roommates from 12 different countries in the world and thousands of memories that I carried with me back home. It is indeed the best platform to understand people from around the world. The people of Germany look to interact with others and not only teach you but also learn from you. It is a place where you can not only enjoy your life but also learn something in the process.

Along with the wonderful nation of Germany, I had the opportunity to visit the neighbouring Schengen countries of Poland,France and Sweden as well. Each of the countries had something different to offer and was a pleasure to visit.

Firstly I would like to thank my guides at Helmholtz, Dr. Lorenz Adrian & Myriel Cooper for giving me this exciting opportunity. I am thankful to my parents who have stood by me through all my endeavours. I thank Dr. Parani, HOD, Department of Genetic Engineering SRM University who supported and encouraged me throughout the application process. My thanks are indeed due to the management of SRM University in helping me in the documenatation process. Last but definitely not the least, my wonderful friends who not only believed in me but kept me going to complete my project successfully.

Decode, a hands-on workshop for school students!

DeCode has been organized successfully every year from 2008 for school students in and around Chennai. DeCode focuses on enriching the practical knowledge for higher secondary students through hands on training in basic molecular techniques like DNA isolation, visualizing on gel, PCR and cytological techniques to view chromosomes at cellular level.
  • DNA was isolated from spring onions.
  • PCR:  The DNA isolated from them was amplified
  • Gel Electrophoresis:  The comparison of the genomic DNA and the amplified PCR product was visualized on the gel.
  •  Mitosis: The different phases of mitosis were observed in acetocarmine stained onion root tips.
DeCode is a workshop organised by the students with the help of the guidelines given by staffs.  DeCode, has trained nearly 200 students till date. Last year we had nearly trained 130 students from Chennai.
